How to Understand Medicare Plans

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD).
You can apply for Medicare 3 months before your 65th birthday or up to 3 months after your 65th birthday. After the initial sign up, you have an annual enrollment period between October 15th-December 7th to choose a policy. This policy will start on January 1. You may also qualify for a special election by moving from one county or state to another or if you lose employer coverage.
